Texas bolstered its 2025 roster on Wednesday morning with a key defensive line transfer.

On Wednesday morning, Texas secured its fifth transfer portal addition and third defensive tackle with former Ohio State junior Hero Kanu.

According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, former Ohio State junior transfer defensive tackle Hero Kanu has committed to Texas football, choosing the Longhorns over Florida, Georgia, and Texas A&M.

Texas football gains additional depth and talent at defensive tackle from the winter transfer portal with former Ohio State DL Hero Kanu. This comes after Kanu’s official visit to Texas over the weekend, following trips to Florida in Gainesville and Georgia in Athens last week.

Kanu had a positive experience during his brief official visit to Texas on Sunday, gaining the insights he needed to commit to the Longhorns this week, as he shared with Horns247 recently.

Over the past two seasons at Ohio State, Kanu recorded 14 total tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, five quarterback pressures, and 10 defensive stops.

In the 2024 season, he played 123 defensive snaps across 15 games for the Buckeyes (per PFF). During the College Football Playoff national semifinals at the Cotton Bowl against the Longhorns, he notched one tackle and one defensive stop.

Kanu becomes the third transfer defensive tackle signed by the Longhorns during the winter portal window, joining former North Carolina junior transfer Travis Shaw and Purdue senior grad transfer Cole Brevard.

Landing Kanu from the transfer portal is a major early offseason victory for Kenny Baker and the Longhorns’ staff. The 6-foot-4, 315-pound defensive tackle adds much-needed depth and size to Texas’ interior defensive line as they prepare for the 2025 season in the SEC.

Kanu is a former blue-chip recruit from Rancho Santa Margarita (CA) Santa Margarita Catholic in the 2022 class. He was ranked as the No. 129 overall prospect nationally in the 247Sports Composite, the No. 19 defensive lineman, and the No. 7 player from California.

Kanu is originally from Germany and grew up playing soccer. He began playing football just a few years ago, in 2021.

Kanu adds to the Longhorns a skilled and powerful interior defensive lineman capable of handling double-teams and anchoring the line in run defense. With his physical abilities and top-tier athleticism, he has the potential to develop into an effective interior pass rusher.

With two years of eligibility left, Kanu has the opportunity to grow into a more refined and versatile defensive tackle for the Longhorns in the trenches.
