When Jalen Hurts steps onto the field for the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 9 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, he’ll be just four days older than Tom Brady was during his second Super Bowl start with the New England Patriots.
The only quarterbacks younger than Jalen Hurts—26 years and 186 days—when making their second Super Bowl start are Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes, who was Hurts’ opponent in his first Super Bowl appearance.
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs edged out Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII on February 12, 2023.
That will be the same matchup for Super Bowl LIX.
Jalen Hurts becomes the seventh quarterback to start in a Super Bowl after losing in his first appearance. Of the six others who accomplished this, five—Len Dawson (Chiefs), Bob Griese (Dolphins), Fran Tarkenton (Vikings), John Elway (Broncos), and Jim Kelly (Bills)—are Hall of Famers. The sixth, Craig Morton, made his first Super Bowl start with the Cowboys and his second with the Broncos.
From Jim Kelly’s second Super Bowl at the end of the 1991 season until now, none of the 20 quarterbacks—from Stan Humphries to Brock Purdy—who lost in their first Super Bowl appearance had returned as a starter. But now that streak is over, and the list is down to 19, as Jalen Hurts has earned another shot at winning the NFL championship.
