Tre Johnson, a freshman guard for the University of Texas Men’s Basketball team, has been named to the preseason watch list for the Jerry West Award, which honors the top shooting guard in Division I men’s college basketball.
Starting Friday, February 7, fans can cast their votes in the remaining rounds at www.hoophallawards.com, with each fan vote contributing as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
In March, the list of top 10 candidates for the Jerry West Award will be narrowed to five finalists, who will then be presented to Jerry West’s family and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee for the final selection; the committee comprises prominent men’s college basketball figures, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.
Tre Johnson leads the SEC in scoring with 19.0 points per game, shooting 45.0% from the field, 37.7% from three-point range, and 88.6% from the free-throw line; he has scored in double figures in 19 of 20 games, surpassed 20 points seven times, and exceeded 30 points once.
Tre Johnson leads the Texas Longhorns in minutes per game (32.7), ranks second in assists (46 total, 2.3 per game), and is third in steals (19), while his 19.0 points per game is the highest for a Texas player since J’Covan Brown’s 20.1 average in the 2011-12 season; he has also been named SEC Freshman of the Week three times this season (Nov. 11, Jan. 27, and Feb. 3).
The Texas Longhorns (15-7, 4-5 SEC) will host the Arkansas Razorbacks (13-8, 2-6 SEC) on Wednesday, February 5, at 8 p.m. Central Time at the Moody Center in Austin, with national television coverage on ESPN2.
