This week, the Golden State Warriors elevated entertainment by merging music and sports. The Bay Area basketball team unveiled a groundbreaking initiative—a record label.
Golden State Entertainment has made the Warriors the first and only NBA team with its own record label. Their debut album, “For The Soil”, was released last week, featuring tracks from Bay Area icons like E-40, Too Short, Saweetie, G-Eazy, Goapele, LaRussell, and Larry June.
The album’s release aligned with the NBA’s All-Star festivities, which took place last weekend in San Francisco. Filipino-American rapper P-Lo, who produced “For The Soil”, performed at an NBA All-Star tipoff party on February 13. A devoted Warriors fan, P-Lo has collaborated with the team before—he even rode in their 2022 championship parade.
Golden State Entertainment’s debut album, “For The Soil”, is a nine-track project that officially hit Spotify on February 12. P-Lo played a key role in the album’s creation, contributing to all nine tracks. He began working on Golden State Entertainment’s first release last summer, but his connection to the organization goes even further. In 2022, P-Lo helped spearhead the launch of Golden State Entertainment—just months before the Warriors’ championship win.
The entire operation is overseen by David Kelly, the Golden State Warriors’ Chief Legal Officer. With a background that makes him ideal for the role, Kelly holds a law degree and previously had a career in the music industry as Capital D, one-half of the Chicago rap duo All Natural.
To release “For The Soil” and future projects, the Warriors teamed up with EMPIRE, a distribution and publishing company. While various NBA teams have collaborated with artists like Jay-Z, 2 Chainz, and DJ Khaled over the years, Golden State stands alone as the only team with its own dedicated record label.
