During a meeting of governors at the White House, President Donald Trump and Maine’s Democratic Governor Janet Mills engaged in a heated exchange over his policy denying federal funding to the state due to its stance on transgender athletes. Mills pushed back against Trump’s decision, firmly stating, “We’ll see you in court,” to which Trump responded that he looked forward to the legal battle and predicted the end of her political career for opposing his order.
Their confrontation was the latest escalation in a broader dispute, as the two had already exchanged criticisms over the previous 24 hours regarding Trump’s efforts to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports. The tense interaction, which unfolded in the State Dining Room, stood out as an unusual departure from the typically cordial exchanges that governors and presidents, even from opposing parties, generally maintain in such settings.
The clash occurred during Trump’s formal remarks welcoming the nation’s governors to the White House. While discussing his recent executive order on transgender athletes, he directly addressed Mills, continuing his public criticism of her, which had begun a day earlier during his speech at the Republican Governors Association.
