Houston Astros first baseman Christian Walker was scratched from a spring training game against the St. Louis Cardinals due to left oblique soreness. This is concerning, as Walker missed over a month last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks because of a strained left oblique muscle. He also had two stints on the injured list in 2021 due to right oblique issues.
Walker joined the Astros on a three-year, $60 million contract during the offseason. In his first four spring training games for Houston, he was 4-for-8 with three doubles and two walks. The Astros are counting on Walker to provide stability at first base after struggling at the position last season.
The Astros are hopeful that Walker’s current soreness is not a serious issue, but given his history with oblique injuries, they are proceeding with caution.
