On Sunday, March 9, 2025, at approximately 3:15 p.m., a small plane crashed in a residential area of Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The aircraft, identified as a single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza, had five individuals on board and had just departed from Lancaster Airport.
Shortly after takeoff, the pilot reported an issue with an open door and requested clearance to return to the airport. Air traffic control granted permission, but moments later urgently instructed the pilot to “pull up.” Subsequently, the plane crashed into the parking lot of the Brethren Village Retirement Community, located near Fairview Drive and Meadowview Court.
The crash resulted in a significant fire, engulfing multiple parked vehicles and producing thick black smoke visible in the area. Emergency responders, including fire and medical teams, arrived promptly to manage the blaze and attend to the victims. While multiple injuries have been reported, specific details regarding the severity and number of casualties have not been confirmed at this time.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro stated that the Pennsylvania State Police are assisting local first responders and that all state resources are available to support the ongoing response efforts.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash. The incident led to the closure of Route 501 in both directions near the crash site.
