Notre Dame football may be on the verge of losing top assistant Mike Mickens to Texas, especially after he was passed over for the defensive coordinator role.
The coaching changes for Notre Dame football may not be finished just yet.
Although it seemed Marcus Freeman had stabilized the situation after recent staff departures, a new report suggests the Irish could soon be searching for a new defensive backs coach. Mike Mickens, widely regarded as one of the best in the field, is reportedly a leading candidate to join the Texas Longhorns in the same role.
The Texas On3 site, Orange Bloods, is leading the reports, but rumors are spreading quickly that Notre Dame will lose Mickens to Texas. The speculation makes a lot of sense, especially since Mickens was passed over for the Irish defensive coordinator job in favor of Chris Ash. Initially, there was talk that Ash and Mickens might share co-defensive coordinator duties, but that arrangement never materialized.
Notre Dame football may be on the verge of losing a defensive coach to the Texas Longhorns.
According to Orange Bloods reporter Anwar Richardson, Mike Mickens is among the top three candidates for the position at Texas, and it appears likely he would leave South Bend if given the opportunity.
This highlights the challenge Notre Dame is facing right now.
While head coach Marcus Freeman has expressed great respect for Mickens and believes he’ll eventually become a defensive coordinator, he couldn’t afford to give such a critical role to someone still gaining experience.
Now, Mickens seems frustrated with being overlooked for the position.
Mike Mickens has been a highly sought-after coach in recent years and even interviewed for the Cincinnati Bearcats defensive coordinator position last year, though he didn’t land the job. Now, Notre Dame hopes either he decides to stay or that, despite being a top candidate, Texas ultimately doesn’t offer him the position.
