Maryland has officially announced the hiring of Buzz Williams as the new head coach of its men’s basketball team. Williams, 52, departs Texas A&M after a successful six-season tenure to lead the Terrapins.
During his time with the Aggies, Williams achieved a 120-73 record, earning SEC Coach of the Year honors twice. His leadership propelled Texas A&M to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 23-11 finish in the most recent season. Notably, his teams secured some of the highest-ranked victories in school history, such as wins over No. 2 Alabama and No. 4 Auburn.
Williams’ coaching career spans several institutions. Prior to Texas A&M, he served as head coach at Virginia Tech (2014-2019), Marquette (2008-2014), and New Orleans (2006-2007), amassing over 100 wins at each program. His overall head coaching record stands at 348-217. Williams has also been recognized for his ability to develop talent, having coached, recruited, or developed 16 NBA players over the course of his career.
Maryland’s previous head coach, Kevin Willard, departed for Villanova over the weekend.
Williams expressed enthusiasm about his new role, stating, “I promise to uphold the history of Maryland basketball and make Terp Nation proud with the men who represent this institution.”
Texas A&M now faces the challenge of filling the vacancy left by Williams. Athletic Director Trev Alberts, who assumed his role in March 2024, will lead the search for a new head coach.
