LSU women’s basketball head coach Kim Mulkey faced a difficult week following the unexpected passing of a close family friend. Despite her personal loss, she still attended the SEC Tournament quarterfinal against Florida but chose to hand over coaching responsibilities to associate head coach Bob Starkey.
Under Starkey’s guidance, LSU secured a victory, leading Mulkey to praise his leadership. She also took the opportunity to advocate for Starkey’s induction into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the sport.
Mulkey highlighted the team’s resilience and ability to come together in her absence, emphasizing the importance of teamwork. She stated, “It’s not about me… that’s why you call it a team,” reinforcing her belief in collective effort over individual presence.
Her primary focus remained on the players’ performance and the unwavering support from her coaching staff. Mulkey credited the team’s unity and determination as key factors in their tournament success, underscoring the strength of the program as they continued their postseason journey.
