It appears that ESPN host and reporter Heather Dinich may have unintentionally revealed the College Football Playoff’s potential expansion plans during this morning’s episode of “Get Up”. According to her comments, the CFP is strongly considering moving to a 14-team format and adjusting its seeding structure once the current system expires after the 2025 season.
Currently, the top four highest-ranked conference champions receive the top seeds and a first-round bye. However, Dinich suggested that discussions are underway to revise the format. Speaking to “On3”, she noted, “We’re headed to major change, inevitably, at some point.” She also explained that any tweaks to the seeding process for this fall would require unanimous approval from all 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame Athletic Director Pete Bevacqua.
If changes occur, the new system could mirror the Selection Committee’s rankings, with the top 12 teams receiving the highest seeds. Instead of prioritizing conference champions, the four highest-ranked teams overall would claim the top four seeds and first-round byes—a subtle yet significant shift in the eyes of the decision-makers.
