The Philadelphia Eagles have decided they will visit the White House this offseason if President Donald Trump extends an invitation, putting an end to speculation that they might refuse, according to ESPN.
While the team has not yet received a formal invitation, Trump confirmed on Tuesday that they would be invited. Speaking to CBS News, he stated, “They will be. We haven’t yet, but we will be. I thought it was a great performance by them. Absolutely, they’ll be extended that invitation. … We’ll do that right away. … They deserve to be down here, and we hope to see them.”
A White House official informed Axios that the Eagles had not declined an invitation, contrary to reports suggesting they planned to turn it down.
During Trump’s first term, the Eagles did not accept an invitation after winning Super Bowl LII in 2018. That year, Trump withdrew the invitation at the last minute as some players had planned to boycott the visit. Since then, no NFL team has visited the White House after winning the Super Bowl.
If the Eagles accept the invitation, they would become the first NFL team to visit the White House during Trump’s second term. However, this depends on the White House officially extending the invitation.
According to CBS Sports Research, the Eagles had an average age of 26 years and 220 days, making them the sixth-youngest team to win a Super Bowl in the Super Bowl era, which began in 1966.
The Eagles dominated in the playoffs with a point differential of +68, the highest by any team since the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Their +12 turnover margin was the best in the postseason since the 1998 Denver Broncos, and they set a record with 818 rushing yards, the most by any team in a single postseason.
