The University of Tennessee’s men’s basketball team, known as the Volunteers, has participated in 26 NCAA Tournaments, not 43 as mentioned. Their most recent appearance was in 2024, marking their 26th participation.
The Volunteers have reached the Elite Eight twice, in 2010 and 2024, which are their deepest runs in the tournament to date.
In the 2025 NCAA Tournament, Tennessee has secured a No. 2 seed for the second consecutive year, tying the program record set in previous seasons. Under the guidance of 10th-year head coach Rick Barnes, the team holds a 9-6 record in NCAA Tournament play, contributing to an overall tournament record of 28-27.
On the women’s side, the Tennessee Lady Volunteers have a storied history in NCAA basketball. They have participated in every NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament since its inception in 1982, making them the only school to do so.
The Lady Vols have secured eight national championships (1987, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2007, and 2008) and have been a No. 1 seed 21 times, second only to Connecticut.
This remarkable consistency underscores the program’s excellence and enduring legacy in women’s college basketball.
This year, the state of Tennessee has a strong presence in March Madness, with four men’s teams and three women’s teams qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. The Tennessee Lady Vols, coached by Kim Caldwell, have won 22 games this season, reflecting their ongoing competitiveness.
