Steve Kerr offered a clear clue about his potential retirement timeline as the Warriors’ coach. In an interview with Mark Willard and Dan Dibley from 95.7 The Game on Wednesday, Kerr revealed that he might step away from coaching once superstar Steph Curry retires, given how closely their careers are linked.
He remarked, “I believe every coaching role eventually reaches its end, and it’s important for everyone to acknowledge that. There might be some truth in that idea. However, I don’t dwell on it. I genuinely enjoy my job, my team, and coaching these players every day. I plan to keep working hard with them, see what we accomplish, and address everything else later.”
When the day comes for Kerr or Curry—or even both—to leave the Warriors, or retire from basketball altogether, it will be a deeply emotional moment for Dub Nation and the entire NBA community. It would be especially heartbreaking, though understandable, if these two Golden State icons were to depart the franchise at the same time.
Kerr and Curry have forged one of the most remarkable coach-player partnerships in sports history. Together, they’ve clinched four NBA championships in both Oakland and San Francisco, and they’ve built the franchise and its passionate fanbase to unprecedented heights—a legacy clearly embodied by the Chase Center.
It’s entirely possible that Kerr will step away from the Warriors once Curry does, given that the coach has accomplished everything alongside the superstar guard. Kerr has led some of the most exceptional NBA teams ever—and Curry was a central part of those squads—and he’s fresh off an unforgettable 2024 Paris Olympics run with Team USA. Ultimately, it’s Curry who continues to dominate.
There isn’t much left for Kerr to achieve, and Curry has nothing more to prove either. The Warriors’ recent surge following the trade for six-time NBA All-Star Jimmy Butler might just be the crowning moment in what has been an incredible 11-year journey for both Curry and Kerr.
For Dub Nation, the only option is to savor the final stages of Curry’s career with the Warriors—a period that could also signal the closing chapter for Kerr. After all, the 36-year-old player won’t be around forever, and the 59-year-old coach can’t lead Golden State indefinitely.
