Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías has been suspended through the 2025 All-Star break for violating Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy. This suspension marks Urías’ second under the policy, making him the first player to be banned twice for such violations.
The recent suspension stems from a September 2023 incident in Los Angeles, where Urías was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence following an altercation with his wife. He pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor domestic battery in May 2024, leading to probation and mandatory counseling.
Urías previously faced a 20-game suspension in 2019 after an arrest for allegedly shoving his girlfriend in a parking lot.
Under MLB’s domestic violence policy, the Commissioner has the authority to discipline players irrespective of legal proceedings. This means that even without an arrest, charge, or conviction, MLB can impose suspensions based on its investigations.
Urías’ contract with the Dodgers expired at the end of the 2023 season, making him a free agent. He will be eligible to sign with any MLB or Mexican League team upon reinstatement on July 17, 2025.
This suspension casts uncertainty over Urías’ future in professional baseball, given the severity of the violations and the precedent set by MLB’s disciplinary actions.
