South Carolina entered Saturday’s game against SC State already shorthanded, missing several key players in Judge Collier, Jalon Kilgore, and JT Geer. The absences were notable, as all three have played important roles early in the season, leaving the Gamecocks thin at multiple positions.
Unfortunately for Shane Beamer’s team, the injury situation only worsened as the game went on. Brandon Cisse, Vicari Swain, Brady Hunt, Josiah Thompson, and Jaquel Holman were all forced to leave the contest with different injuries and did not return, adding to the growing list of concerns.
On Saturday night, Shane Beamer described South Carolina’s injury list as “too long to even name,” reflecting the toll of the win over SC State. However, his tone shifted by Sunday, as he expressed optimism about the team’s recovery outlook.
Beamer noted that most of the players who left the game banged up are expected to be available when the Gamecocks open SEC play against Vanderbilt this Saturday. His update provided a boost of confidence for a roster that has battled early-season depth concerns.
At his Tuesday press conference, Shane Beamer offered another brief update on South Carolina’s health status. He noted that the team is “trending in the right direction,” but stopped short of specifics, reminding that official reports will come later in the week.
Beamer emphasized the importance of consistency with SEC protocols, saying the injury update will be released at the appropriate time as always. For now, his message was clear: the Gamecocks are improving physically as they gear up for Saturday’s conference opener against Vanderbilt.
On Sunday, Beamer singled out senior tight end Brady Hunt as his biggest injury concern. Hunt, a key starter for the Gamecocks’ offense, was forced to leave Saturday night’s game early, leaving questions about his availability moving forward.
“Feel pretty optimistic on everyone as we sit here today in regards to being able to play Saturday night against Vanderbilt,” Beamer said Sunday. “Brady Hunt is the only one that we’re doing some testing on today, and still getting some of the results back from that, so keeping our fingers crossed and prayers for him that we get a good report here this afternoon. But everybody else is trending to being able to play this weekend.”
During his weekly call-in show last week, fifth-year head coach Shane Beamer shared that he anticipates both Judge Collier and JT Geer returning in time for South Carolina’s SEC opener against Vanderbilt.
Because this is an SEC contest, both South Carolina and Vanderbilt are required to provide player availability updates during the week. The first official report is scheduled to be released shortly after 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
The SEC’s injury report system will provide multiple updates leading into Saturday’s game. The next availability report is set for Thursday at 8 p.m., with another on Friday and a final release 90 minutes before kickoff.
In addition, Shane Beamer often shares updates during his Thursday night call-in show. The reporting system, approved by the SEC last season, applies not only to football but also to men’s and women’s basketball as well as baseball, ensuring consistent transparency across the league’s major sports.
Under SEC policy, school personnel are required to submit player availability reports beginning three days prior to each football game, with daily updates culminating in a final release 90 minutes before kickoff.
For basketball and baseball, the process is slightly different. Teams must file reports the evening before competition, followed by a final update on game day, maintaining consistent transparency across multiple sports.
The SEC has outlined clear consequences for mishandling injury reports, with fines ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 in football and $15,000 to $25,000 in basketball and baseball for late or inaccurate submissions.
Player status will be categorized throughout the week as available, probable, doubtful, or questionable, shifting on game day to available, game-time decision, or out mirroring the NFL model. Both South Carolina and Vanderbilt enter Saturday’s matchup at 2-0, with kickoff set for 7:45 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium on SEC Network.
