Just minutes ago, Lamar Wilkerson made his highly anticipated commitment official via social media, a decision later confirmed by multiple sources close to the program. The announcement marks a significant victory for Head Coach Mark Pope and his staff, who outlasted intense competition from Big Ten contender Indiana and SEC rival Auburn.
Wilkerson, a dynamic 6’5” shooting guard from Oak Hill Academy (VA), has been electric on the prep scene this past season. Averaging 27.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game, he’s captured national attention with his explosive athleticism, elite shooting range, and high-level court awareness—traits that have sparked comparisons to NBA stars. His commitment caps off a dramatic recruiting journey filled with campus visits, buzzy last-minute pitches, and nonstop speculation from fans and analysts alike.
“I want to thank every school that recruited me and believed in me,” Lamar Wilkerson shared during his announcement. “But after a lot of prayer and long conversations with my family, I’ve decided to take my talents to Lexington and become a Wildcat.”
Wilkerson’s commitment is a major recruiting win for Kentucky, signaling the program’s aggressive push to return to national prominence. Head Coach Mark Pope made Wilkerson a top priority, attending many of his key games throughout the season—a clear sign of just how highly the staff valued his potential.
Both Indiana and Auburn remained strong contenders until the very end. Auburn’s Bruce Pearl made a late surge with a competitive NIL offer and a path to immediate playing time, while Indiana pitched Wilkerson as the centerpiece of its resurgence under Mike Woodson. Ultimately, however, the allure of Kentucky’s historic tradition, national exposure, and proven NBA pipeline sealed the deal.
“We believe Lamar has the potential to be a one-and-done type player,” said Kentucky assistant coach Chin Coleman. “He’s got that wow factor—the kind of dynamic scorer who can take over games and energize a crowd. Big Blue Nation is going to love what he brings to the court.”
Wilkerson, standing 6’5” and coming off a dominant season at Oak Hill Academy, adds even more firepower to a Kentucky recruiting class that already includes top-10 forward Darnell Briggs and four-star point guard Trey Watson. Together, this trio is generating early buzz as one of the top freshman classes in the country.
With Wilkerson now officially in the mix, Kentucky’s message to the rest of college basketball is loud and clear: the Wildcats are reloaded, revitalized, and ready to compete for titles once again.
