Deone Walker is officially a part of Big Buffalo Nation. After a longer wait than he likely anticipated, the former Kentucky defensive lineman has finally found his NFL destination. Walker, a native of Detroit, was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the fourth round of the NFL Draft with the 109th overall pick.
The Bills had already made a splash earlier in the draft by selecting Maxwell Hairston with the 30th pick in the first round. Now, both Hairston and Walker will reunite with former Kentucky running back Ray Davis, who is also part of the Buffalo roster, creating a strong Kentucky connection up north.
Before his junior season, many draft experts had projected Walker to be a first-round selection. There was significant hope that his name would be called on the second day of the NFL Draft. However, much like the turbulent 2024 Kentucky football season, Walker’s journey took unexpected and challenging turns.
Coming off a standout sophomore season where he racked up 7.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss, expectations were sky-high for the massive 6-foot-7, 331-pound defensive force. What wasn’t immediately known was that Walker played the entire 2024 season battling a serious injury—a pars defect, which is a stress fracture in the vertebrae of the lower back.
“It was throughout the whole season,” Walker explained after Kentucky’s Pro Day. “If you go back and watch the games, you’ll see me on the sidelines, bent over in pain.” The injury severely limited his mobility and effectiveness, although he managed to miss only one game despite the pain.
As a result of the back injury, Walker’s production dipped significantly, recording just five tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks during his final season. His pre-draft testing numbers also fell short of expectations, contributing to his slide down the draft board much farther than initially predicted.
Despite the setbacks, one thing remains true: you can’t teach Deone Walker’s rare size, athleticism, and disruptive potential. Even after a difficult final year at Kentucky, Walker’s natural gifts and past production made him an easy choice for the Bills to take a chance on.
With his injury behind him, Walker enters the next chapter of his football career with something to prove. Known for wreaking havoc along the defensive front, Walker now has the opportunity to showcase his true talent in the NFL without the physical limitations he endured last season.
During his Kentucky career, Walker made a lasting impact, starting 36 out of 37 games and tallying 132 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 13 quarterback hurries, and six pass breakups, along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. His accolades include First-Team All-SEC honors in 2023 and Second-Team selections in both 2022 and 2024, plus Freshman All-American recognition.
One of Walker’s standout moments came in 2023 against a Top-25 Florida team. In that game, he notched two tackles, a sack, and deflected a pass that led to an interception, highlighting the disruptive presence he can bring. Now healthy and hungry, Walker’s journey continues—and the Buffalo Bills are ready to unleash his potential on Sundays.
