LeBron James continues to perform at a superstar level, but it’s clear that he’s approaching the twilight of his illustrious career. Having just completed his 22nd season in the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves. James, along with Vince Carter, is one of only two players in history to have played this many seasons, and if he returns, he will make history as the first player to reach 23 seasons.
However, it’s uncertain if James will return for another season. When asked about his future plans, he declined to provide a clear answer. “I don’t have an answer to that,” he said. “I’ll sit down with my wife, family, and support group … have a conversation with myself on how long I want to continue to play. We’ll see.” This approach is consistent with his stance over the past few years, as he often leaves the door open without committing to a definitive timeline.
Back in 2023, James echoed a similar sentiment after the Lakers were swept by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals. “I got a lot to think about,” he shared at the time. “Just personally, with me moving forward with the game of basketball, I got a lot to think about.” While his comments have remained consistent, they leave fans wondering about the future of the NBA’s most durable player.
Despite his uncertainty, James did return for the 2023-24 season and is expected to return for the 2025-26 season, especially given his player option worth over \$52 million. His decision to continue playing seems almost inevitable, but what remains uncertain is what further goals he has in the league.
At this stage of his career, the primary question is what more James wants to achieve. This past season, he fulfilled a long-standing personal goal when he played alongside his son, Bronny James, who the Lakers drafted as the 55th overall pick in the 2023 draft. His younger son, Bryce, will soon be a freshman at the University of Arizona and eligible for the 2026 NBA Draft. If LeBron hopes to play with Bryce, he will need to continue his career for at least two more years.
James still harbors ambitions of winning a fifth NBA championship. The Lakers are expected to position themselves to support that goal next season. With the midseason acquisition of Luka Dončić, the Lakers are improving their roster, which could allow LeBron to play a reduced role and conserve energy over a long season.
Additionally, the development of Austin Reaves provides another option for the Lakers to ease the burden on James, keeping him fresh for critical moments. With ample draft capital and the potential to make strategic moves in free agency, the Lakers could become even more competitive in their efforts to bring another championship to Los Angeles.
However, at this point in his career, there are very few records left for James to break. He could surpass Robert Parish’s all-time games played record next season if he plays in 50 games. He already holds the all-time scoring record and a multitude of other career achievements, including four MVP awards and four championships.
LeBron could have easily retired years ago with a compelling case for being the greatest basketball player of all time. His accomplishments place him firmly in that conversation, and he’s achieved virtually every individual and team accolade imaginable. Yet, he continues to play, further solidifying his legacy with each passing season.
Ultimately, the decision on when to retire will come down to LeBron’s personal choice. As time passes, that decision becomes more imminent. For now, the Lakers and their fans must hold on to the hope that this season won’t be his last, as they continue to chase the elusive fifth championship with one of the greatest players ever to step onto the court.
