On Sunday, LSU captured its eighth national championship with a 5-3 win over Coastal Carolina in Game 2 of the College World Series. The Tigers’ previous CWS title came in 2023.

The game began with fireworks, as Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall was ejected in the first inning for arguing with the umpire.

Following his ejection, Kevin Schnall stormed onto the field and was hit with a “prolonged arguing” violation, meaning he would have been ineligible to coach a potential Game 3 had Coastal Carolina won. Shortly after, first base coach Matt Schilling was also tossed for protesting Schnall’s removal from the game.

In the second inning, Coastal Carolina jumped ahead 1-0 when Dean Mihos launched a solo home run over the left field wall. However, LSU responded quickly.

Ethan Frey tied the game in the top of the third with a double to left, and the Tigers carried that momentum into a productive fourth inning.

With the bases loaded in the fourth, Chris Stanfield delivered a clutch single to left, giving LSU a 3-1 advantage. Two outs later, freshman Derek Curiel ripped a line drive through the infield, plating two more runs.

Suddenly, LSU held a strong lead but Coastal Carolina wasn’t done yet. In the seventh, Wells Sykes launched a two-run homer to left, trimming the deficit to 5-3.

Coastal Carolina refused to go quietly, but LSU right-hander Chase Shores made life difficult with his dominant arm. Despite their struggles, the Chanticleers kept fighting.

Dean Mihos led off the ninth with a single to right, sparking hope for a rally. But Shores held firm, striking out the next batter and sealing the win with a flawless double play.

LSU wasted no time storming the field, swarming the mound in a jubilant dogpile with closer Chase Shores at the center of it all. Even legendary former coach Skip Bertman joined the celebration, stepping onto the field to share in the moment.

The win marked a milestone for head coach Jay Johnson, who became the fastest in NCAA history to claim two national championships. Pitcher Kade Anderson earned Most Outstanding Player honors for his standout performance throughout the tournament.
