Mets pitcher Frankie Montas weighs in on his injury.

Mets starter Frankie Montas experienced an odd sensation in his tricep area during his first bullpen session at Clover Park last week in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He was diagnosed with a high-grade lat strain and received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection yesterday as his initial treatment. Although the injection appears to be effective so far, Montas estimates that he won’t be able to throw a baseball for at least 4 to 6 weeks.

Earlier this week, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza put his timetable at 6-8 weeks.

“It’s already feeling pretty good,” Montas told reporters at his locker. “So just gotta let that thing work and just jump into this rehab, like I said, so I can come back as soon as possible.”
Montas stated that he had a routine winter, maintaining his workouts and throwing sessions with the hope of extending his late-season form into 2025. In his final 57⅓ innings, he recorded a 4.55 ERA and 70 strikeouts, a figure notably inflated by his penultimate regular-season start against the Arizona Diamondbacks, during which he gave up seven earned runs in just 2⅔ innings. Excluding that outing, his numbers were a more impressive 3.65 ERA with 66 strikeouts over 54⅔ innings. At Amazin’ Day in January, he expressed his excitement about returning to the mound, having felt in great rhythm last season. Additionally, Montas reported that his four-seam fastball velocity increased to 95.6 mph from 94.8 mph in 2023, and he has logged 150⅔ innings—the most since 2021.

“I don’t think anybody wants to start, you know, the first impression like that,” Montas said. “At the end of the day, it’s things that are out of my control, you know? I prepare myself to pitch this season this winter. …

“But like I said, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”
