Basketball Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki admitted he felt “a little disappointed and sad” for Luka Doncic after the Dallas Mavericks unexpectedly traded their franchise star to the Los Angeles Lakers in a move that stunned the NBA.
Dirk Nowitzki believes Luka Doncic was caught off guard by the shocking trade that sent him from the Mavericks to the Lakers. Speaking at 96.7 The Ticket’s Ticketstock event, Nowitzki shared that he attended Doncic’s Lakers debut at the 25-year-old’s invitation, saying, “I felt like I had to support him.”
Having played with Doncic in his final NBA season, Nowitzki has remained a mentor and close friend, describing him as “a good kid.” While he admitted it was surreal to see Doncic in a Lakers jersey, he made it clear that while he’ll always support Luka, he’ll never be a Lakers fan.
Nowitzki acknowledged the initial shock of the trade, which brought Anthony Davis to Dallas, but believes Doncic is now embracing the opportunity to play alongside LeBron James for a franchise with 17 NBA championships. “He’s playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world,” Nowitzki said, adding that Doncic is beginning to see the potential in his new situation.
