Phelps Selected for Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List.

Texas A&M guard Zhuric Phelps was among 50 top college basketball players named to the 2024-25 Oscar Robertson Midseason Watch List, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced Monday. The award is given annually to the nation’s top college basketball player.

Phelps, a senior transfer from Midland, Texas, is the No. 10-ranked Aggies’ leading scorer with 310 points and tops the team in steals with 38. He is also among the team’s leaders in three-pointers, rebounds, and assists. This season, he has reached double figures in 16 of 21 games, including 10 performances with 15 or more points.

Phelps, who spent his first three college seasons at SMU, has elevated his performance in SEC play, averaging 17.2 points and 6.1 rebounds across nine conference games. He is one of only three SEC players—and the only guard—averaging over 17.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

When Wade Taylor IV was sidelined for three conference games due to injury, Phelps stepped up, averaging 26.3 points and 7.0 rebounds in that stretch. His standout moment came against No. 17 Oklahoma, where he scored a career-high 34 points. Leading the Aggies’ 18-point comeback, he poured in 28 second-half points, and his clutch three-pointer with 19 seconds left secured the win. His 34-point performance tied the record for the most points by an Aggie in a road game against a ranked opponent, a feat first achieved by Jeff Overhouse against Oral Roberts in 1972.

The winner of the Oscar Robertson Trophy will be revealed during the NCAA Men’s Final Four in San Antonio, held from April 5-7. The trophy will be formally presented at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. A final watch list will be announced in early March, and those selected will be featured on the USBWA’s annual awards ballot.
