Tampering has become a major issue in modern college athletics with the rise of NIL, the transfer portal, and free transfers. On Monday, reports emerged that South Carolina’s starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers was targeted in a major tampering attempt.
In a separate story on Sellers’ rise, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman quoted Sellers’ father, Norris, revealing that LaNorris declined a massive offer aimed at luring him away from South Carolina. Feldman reported the highest offer reached \$8 million over two years.
Feldman quoted LaNorris Sellers’ father, Norris, saying his son received “all kinds of crazy numbers” in transfer offers. He told LaNorris the decision was his to make, but shared his perspective: their goal was to earn a scholarship, play football, get a degree, and move forward—not chase NIL money. He emphasized they didn’t come to South Carolina for a payday and wouldn’t leave just because other schools offered more. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” he said.
This information isn’t exactly new GamecockCentral has previously informed subscribers that other programs pursued Sellers this offseason. However, this marks the first time someone close to Sellers, namely his father, has publicly confirmed it.
The key takeaway from Feldman’s report for South Carolina fans is clear: LaNorris Sellers is staying put. The standout quarterback will suit up in garnet and black this fall as a Heisman contender. Based on current signs, the only way he leaves is to advance to the next level.
Sellers, entering his redshirt sophomore season, will be eligible for the NFL Draft after this year. Early projections already peg him as a potential first-round pick in April. If those forecasts hold true, it would signal a big year ahead for both Sellers and USC.
LaNorris Sellers and South Carolina will kick off the 2025 season on August 31st against Virginia Tech at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The game is set to air on ESPN at 3:00 PM.
