REPORT: Maryland Contacts Alabama’s Nate Oats with $25M Offer, But He Declines
Maryland, in search of a new head coach, reportedly reached out to Alabama’s Nate Oats with a $25 million offer, but Oats has reaffirmed his commitment to the Crimson Tide, stating he has “no interest” in the vacancy.
Oats, one of the highest-paid coaches in college basketball, signed a six-year contract extension with Alabama in March 2024, which starts at $5 million annually and escalates to $7.55 million by the 2029-30 season. His contract also includes a substantial buyout clause, making a move unlikely.
Maryland’s pursuit of Oats underscores their urgency in finding a new leader, but Alabama fans can breathe easy knowing their coach isn’t going anywhere.
Maryland is searching for a new head coach after Kevin Willard left to take over at Villanova, and one of their top targets was reportedly Alabama’s Nate Oats.
Following another strong season that saw Oats lead the Crimson Tide to the Elite Eight, Maryland reportedly reached out with a $25 million offer to lure him away from Tuscaloosa. However, according to Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68, Oats has “zero interest” in the Maryland job, and there is “no truth” to rumors linking him to the Big Ten program.
Oats remains locked into his six-year contract extension with Alabama, which runs through 2030 and cements his status as one of college basketball’s highest-paid coaches.
