On April 17, 2025, a tragic mass shooting occurred at Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee, Florida. The incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to six others. The shooting took place near the university’s student union around 11:56 a.m. EDT and lasted less than five minutes. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old FSU student Phoenix Ikner, was shot by police and is currently hospitalized.

The two fatalities were Robert Morales, a dining coordinator at FSU and co-founder of Gordos Cuban Cuisine, and Tiru Chabba, a 45-year-old regional vice president with Aramark Collegiate Hospitality and father of two. Both were not students but were affiliated with the university through their work.

The suspect, Phoenix Ikner, is the stepson of a Leon County sheriff’s deputy. He used his stepmother’s former service handgun during the attack. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the shooting.

In response to the incident, FSU canceled all classes and business operations through April 18 and all home athletic events through April 20. A vigil was held on April 18 at Langford Green in front of Doak Campbell Stadium to honor the victims.

The community has come together to support the victims’ families, with fundraisers launched to assist them during this difficult time.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the shooting, seeking to understand the circumstances and motivations that led to this tragic event.
