The SEC’s decision to shift to a nine-game conference schedule has already led to a significant scheduling shake-up for South Carolina. The Gamecocks are among the first teams to feel the effects of the expanded league slate.
On Monday, the University of South Carolina and the University of Miami revealed they have mutually agreed to cancel their upcoming home-and-home football series. The two-match set was initially scheduled to take place during the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
This decision means the highly anticipated meetings between the Gamecocks and Hurricanes will no longer happen as planned. Both schools cited the conference schedule changes as the primary reason for ending the series early.
Miami was originally set to kick off the 2026 season at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C., while South Carolina would have traveled to Hard Rock Stadium for the return matchup in 2027.
The ACC will also adopt a nine-game conference schedule beginning in 2026, further affecting future non-league matchups.
For 2026, South Carolina’s schedule still includes a home non-conference game against Towson and a road rivalry game at Clemson. The Gamecocks are reportedly searching for a third non-conference opponent to fill the slate.
The adjustment is logical, considering the heightened competitiveness within the SEC and the annual clash with Clemson. Balancing these challenges makes scheduling additional marquee opponents more difficult.
It’s reasonable to assume that other future non-conference matchups against Power 4 programs could also be reconsidered as schedules tighten.
South Carolina currently has home-and-home series lined up with North Carolina in 2028 and 2029, followed by N.C. State in 2030 and 2031.
The Gamecocks are also slated to meet Virginia Tech in another home-and-home set scheduled for the 2034 and 2035 seasons, though those games could be evaluated in light of shifting conference demands.
According to the release, Miami’s 2026 non-conference slate now consists of home games against Florida A&M and Central Michigan, along with a road trip to face Notre Dame.
