The University of Nebraska honors legendary volleyball coach John Cook by naming an arena after him and presenting a $400,000 tribute, celebrating his legacy as a beloved leader and the heart of Husker Volleyball.

The University of Nebraska is honoring longtime volleyball coach John Cook with a $400,000 tribute that includes renaming the volleyball arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center and erecting a bronze statue in his likeness.

The renamed John Cook Arena recognizes his incredible 25-year tenure as Nebraska’s head volleyball coach, during which he led the team to four national titles, 12 NCAA Semifinal appearances, and 14 conference championships.

Cook’s coaching success is reflected in his outstanding career record of 883-176 overall and 722-103 at Nebraska, where his .875 winning percentage is the best of any Division I volleyball program in the past 25 years.

As part of the project, the university will install new signage at the arena and unveil a life-sized bronze statue of Cook on the North side of the Devaney Sports Center, symbolizing his lasting influence on Nebraska volleyball.

The statue is being created by George Lundeen, a celebrated artist from Nebraska, and will serve as a powerful tribute to Cook’s enduring contributions to the sport and the community.

Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen praised Cook not just for his championships, but for the transformative impact he’s had on the program and the broader Nebraska community.

While the arena takes on Cook’s name, the court inside will still honor former coach Terry Pettit, maintaining a link to the program’s storied history and the mentor who helped shape it.

The building itself, the Bob Devaney Sports Center, retains its name in honor of the iconic former football coach and athletic director who played a key role in Nebraska athletics.

Cook expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition, saying he’s honored to be celebrated alongside legends like Pettit and Devaney, and deeply appreciative of Husker Nation’s support.

The entire project is set for completion later this year, ensuring that Cook’s legacy will continue to motivate future generations of players and fans alike.
