New Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi has wasted no time reshaping the organization in his first offseason. He made a bold move by selecting Cam Ward as the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, naming him the franchise’s future quarterback. Beyond that, Borgonzi has significantly overhauled the roster, signaling a new era in Nashville.
The mistakes of previous general managers Jon Robinson and Ran Carthon appear to be firmly in the rearview mirror. Borgonzi has established his own direction for the franchise, utilizing both ample cap space and a wealth of draft picks to bring in new talent.
However, with any rebuild comes the difficult task of parting ways with holdovers from past regimes. On Wednesday, ESPN’s Turron Davenport reported that the Titans released linebacker Kyron Johnson and wide receiver Tay Martin, both due to injury concerns.
Johnson had spent time on the Titans’ practice squad last season but was never promoted to the active roster. His release won’t drastically impact Tennessee’s plans moving forward, as he never took the field during a regular season game.
Martin, on the other hand, made a brief but memorable contribution last year. In his only appearance, he caught a 49-yard touchdown pass against the Houston Texans, showcasing his potential despite limited opportunities.
Still, with the influx of new talent at wide receiver and linebacker, including the signing of Cody Barton, both Johnson and Martin found themselves on the outside looking in. Borgonzi’s aggressive roster moves left little room for fringe players from the previous front office.
These early decisions underscore Borgonzi’s willingness to make tough choices to build a competitive team. While some of these moves may seem minor, they reflect a broader strategy to cleanse the roster of underperforming or injury-prone players.
The Titans’ new leadership is clearly prioritizing durability, upside, and fit within their evolving system. The team’s actions this offseason point to a focused and deliberate plan to reshape its identity on both sides of the ball.
As the Borgonzi era begins in earnest, fans can expect continued changes designed to position Tennessee for long-term success. Although some familiar faces are being shown the door, the franchise appears to be on a fresh and promising trajectory.
