Trae Young has announced that he has accepted a role as an assistant GM for Oklahoma basketball.

Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young is giving back to his alma mater, taking on a role as assistant general manager for Oklahoma basketball while also making a $1 million donation to the program. Young, who announced the news on NBA Today, becomes just the second active NBA player to take on a front-office role with his former school, following Steph Curry at Davidson.

“I’m excited to announce that I’m accepting a role with OU basketball as an assistant GM, as well as making a million-dollar donation to help kick-start this whole thing,” Young said. “Being from Norman and playing there, it’s exciting times, and I’m looking forward to this new role.”

With college athletics constantly evolving—especially with the transfer portal and NIL—Trae Young felt it was the right time to take on this new role. While he continues to help the Atlanta Hawks fight for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference, Young will balance his duties as both an NBA player and assistant GM for Oklahoma basketball.

With college basketball evolving, particularly through NIL and the transfer portal, Trae Young sees this as the perfect time for former players to give back to their schools.

“The game has changed, and with NIL, it’s the perfect time for guys to be more involved with the schools that helped shape them,” Young said. “For someone like Steph and me, we already represent our schools off the court and in the locker rooms, talking trash all the time. Now, to officially represent even more is going to be special.”

Trae Young is a four-time NBA All-Star and was a standout player before his professional career, starring at Oklahoma. Selected as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks, he was immediately traded to Atlanta in exchange for Luka Dončić.

During his time with the Sooners, Young earned multiple accolades, including 2018 NCAA scoring champion, assists leader, First-Team All-Big 12, Big 12 Freshman of the Year, and the Wayman Tisdale Award. A First-Team All-American, Young was a can’t-miss prospect and quickly became one of college basketball’s brightest stars.
