The Minnesota Vikings could have a new starting quarterback in 2025. Sam Darnold led the team to a 14-3 record last season, but he may be on the move as the Vikings are unlikely to place the franchise tag on him, according to NFL Media.
With Minnesota’s decision, Darnold is expected to become a free agent on March 12.
At 27, Darnold is coming off his best season, ranking fifth in passing yards (4,319) and touchdown passes (35). He was originally signed to a one-year deal as a bridge quarterback after the Vikings selected J.J. McCarthy with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, when McCarthy suffered a preseason knee injury, Darnold secured the starting job.
The Vikings had the option to ensure Darnold’s return for the 2025 season by using the franchise tag, but doing so would have cost them $40.2 million—a significant increase from the $10 million they paid him in 2024.
Multiple reports indicate that the Vikings plan to try re-signing Darnold, but the franchise tag will not be part of the equation. With the NFL’s franchise tag deadline set for 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Minnesota has until then to make its final decision.
In early February, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell suggested that the team might allow Darnold to test free agency.
“He’s earned the right to be a free agent,” O’Connell said on Feb. 6. “But we will continue to have ongoing dialogue and discussions with him and his representation, as well as being really excited about J.J. McCarthy and where he’s at in his rehab.”
Darnold Struggled Late After a Strong Start
For much of the season, Sam Darnold performed like one of the league’s top quarterbacks, but his play declined toward the end. In Minnesota’s final two games, he led the offense to just 18 total points, averaging only 205.5 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception in back-to-back losses to the Lions (31-9 in the regular-season finale) and Rams (27-9 in the playoffs).
Following those struggles, Darnold’s stock took a hit, and the Vikings now appear open to moving on. If he doesn’t return, J.J. McCarthy could be in line to take his first NFL snaps. McCarthy missed the entire 2024 season after tearing his meniscus in August.
It remains to be seen whether Darnold would be willing to take a discount to stay in Minnesota. Before joining the Vikings, he had struggled in his career, posting a 21-35 record since being drafted third overall by the Jets in 2018. However, his time in Minnesota marked a career resurgence, which could impact his market value and decision-making in free agency.
If Darnold departs from Minnesota, the Giants and Raiders are expected to be among the top teams pursuing him. For more details on other potential suitors, check out this link.
