After the first week of Alabama’s spring practice, the competition to replace departing quarterback Jalen Milroe is intensifying, with three primary candidates vying for the starting role:
Ty Simpson
A redshirt sophomore, Ty Simpson has been part of the Crimson Tide program for two seasons, serving as the primary backup last year. His familiarity with the offensive system and collegiate experience position him as a leading contender. Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy noted that Simpson currently has the “inside track” to the starting job but emphasized that the competition remains open.
Austin Mack
Originally committing to Washington, Austin Mack transferred to Alabama following head coach Kalen DeBoer. After redshirting his first year at Washington, Mack saw limited action last season, completing two of three passes for 39 yards and a touchdown. At 6’6″ and 236 pounds, his physical attributes make him a formidable presence in the quarterback room.
Keelon Russell
A five-star true freshman, Keelon Russell brings a dynamic skill set to the competition. Despite his youth, Russell’s talent and confidence have been evident in early practices, and he is expected to challenge his more experienced counterparts for the starting position.
