Wildfires raging through South Carolina.

Over the weekend, South Carolina experienced a significant surge in wildfire activity, leading Governor Henry McMaster to declare a state of emergency on Sunday, March 2, 2025.  The declaration aims to bolster wildfire response efforts and ensure that first responders have the necessary resources to combat the fires effectively.

As of Sunday evening, more than 175 wildfires have been reported across the state, affecting approximately 4,200 acres. The largest of these is the Carolina Forest fire near Myrtle Beach, which has expanded to 1,600 acres and is currently 30% contained. This fire prompted evacuations in several neighborhoods; however, residents have since been allowed to return home as containment efforts progress.

In response to the heightened fire risk, a statewide outdoor burning ban has been implemented and will remain in effect until further notice. Governor McMaster emphasized that violators of this ban will face criminal prosecution. The fires have been fueled by dry conditions, low humidity, and strong winds, creating critical fire weather across the region.

Firefighters, supported by resources such as Black Hawk helicopters from the South Carolina Army National Guard, are working tirelessly to contain the blazes. Despite the extensive fire activity, no structures have been lost, and no injuries have been reported.

Residents are advised to stay informed through official emergency sources and to report any immediate threats by calling 911.  Motorists in affected areas should exercise caution due to reduced visibility from smoke.
