Heading into the 2025 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers were in need of a quarterback, joining a number of other franchises in search of a new signal caller. The team had seen both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson depart in free agency and was also waiting on veteran Aaron Rodgers to announce whether he would return to the league.
Despite their clear need, the Steelers refrained from selecting a quarterback in the early rounds, leaving many to wonder if they would address the position at all during the draft weekend. As Day 3 arrived, pressure began to mount, especially from one passionate prospect.
Ohio State quarterback Will Howard was among those closely watching the later rounds, hoping for an opportunity. With the sixth round underway, Howard made his feelings known, pleading on camera, “Please pick me, Pittsburgh.” His emotional appeal quickly gained attention.
Not long after his plea, the Steelers made it official, selecting Howard with the 185th overall pick. The pick fulfilled Howard’s dream of staying in his home state, as the Downingtown, Pennsylvania native was ecstatic to represent a franchise based just a few hours west.
Speaking with head coach Mike Tomlin on the phone after the pick, Howard joked that his Eagles-loving hometown would now have to become Steelers territory. His excitement was evident, as he embraced the opportunity to join the black and gold.
Howard was the eighth quarterback off the board in this year’s draft, capping off a highly successful college career. After four seasons at Kansas State, he transferred to Ohio State and had a stellar final season, throwing for over 4,000 yards and leading the Buckeyes to a national championship.
With the selection, Howard joins a quarterback room that currently includes Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. The team remains in flux at the position, as they continue to monitor the free-agent market, with names like Rodgers and Kirk Cousins still in play.
Though Pittsburgh’s quarterback situation remains unsettled, Howard’s selection brings a new sense of optimism. The rookie now has a chance to prove himself and potentially become a long-term answer for the franchise.
More than just a roster addition, Howard represents a player who genuinely wanted to wear the Steelers uniform. His enthusiasm and emotional connection to the team could serve as a spark during offseason training and into the regular season.
Ultimately, Will Howard got what he wished for—a shot with the team he openly rooted for on draft day. Now, it’s up to him to make the most of the opportunity and carve out his future in Pittsburgh.
