Can the Miami Dolphins risk losing Jevon Holland?

Will the Miami Dolphins allow another former draft pick to leave in free agency?

Since being selected in the second round from Oregon, Jevon Holland has been a key player in the Dolphins’ secondary. However, following an uneven 2024 season, his future with the team remains unclear.

As the Dolphins start the offseason $12 million above the salary cap, difficult choices are on the horizon, with Holland’s free agency being one of the most significant. Despite limited flexibility, PFF argues that the Dolphins cannot afford to let Holland leave in free agency.

“Miami’s secondary faced challenges, resulting in a 25th-ranked PFF coverage grade in 2024,” wrote Dalton Wasserman. “Holland is a key part of that secondary, with elite performances on his record. Losing him would only add to the issues for a team with limited resources.”

The Dolphins ranked sixth in the league, allowing 314 yards per game, while also securing the sixth-best passing offense under first-year coordinator Anthony Weaver. Despite being among the bottom seven in sacks, Miami’s defense limited opposing quarterbacks to 210 yards per game.

Holland’s 2024 season saw a career-low 62 tackles and, for the first time, fewer than two takeaways. According to PFF, opposing quarterbacks targeted him 39 times, completing 24 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns.

“I do want to stay in Miami, but I’m also open to the idea of being elsewhere,” Holland said earlier this month on the Breakin’ House Rules podcast with NFL Network’s Cam Wolfe. “I wouldn’t mind coming back, and I wouldn’t mind leaving either… I’m not really worried about it. Whatever happens will happen for a reason.”

Although Holland had a down year, it’s clear that the defense is stronger with him in the secondary. However, given Holland’s outlook on free agency and Miami’s limited resources, it might be in the best interest of both parties to part ways.
