Dominant singles play leads No. 8 Auburn over No. 15 Vanderbilt

Auburn women’s tennis coach Jordan Szabo praised his team’s maturity and resilience after a tough loss in the doubles point. Despite having a match point, Auburn lost the doubles point but bounced back to win all six singles matches against Vanderbilt.

Auburn’s Ava Esposito quickly tied the team score with a straight-set win at the No. 5 singles position. Angella Okutoyi then took the lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 56 Valeria Ray.

Merna Refaat added another point with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 4 singles position, giving Auburn a 3-1 lead. Freshman Alice Battesti clinched the team victory with a three-set win at the No. 6 position.

Auburn’s Ava Hrastar and DJ Bennett also added wins, with Hrastar dominating the last two sets and Bennett coming back from an opening set loss to win in a tiebreaker.

The win improves Auburn’s record to 16-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play. They will face Missouri at noon CT on Sunday.
