One team’s departure is another team’s opportunity. Bobby Slowik, dismissed by the Houston Texans following their second-round playoff loss, was hired Tuesday night by the Miami Dolphins for a newly created senior role, where he will mentor quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
While in Houston, Slowik mentored quarterback C.J. Stroud, who surpassed 4,000 passing yards in 2023, becoming just the fifth rookie to achieve that milestone. With Slowik joining Miami, current passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell may see his role adjusted to accommodate the new addition.
Bevell was a candidate for the Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive coordinator job but was passed over in favor of former Ohio State OC Chip Kelly. Meanwhile, Slowik reunites with Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, having previously worked together with the 49ers from 2017 to 2021. Slowik also has a family connection in Miami—his older brother, Ryan Slowik, serves as the team’s defensive backs coach and pass game specialist.
At 37, Bobby Slowik was a sought-after head coaching candidate in 2024, especially after C.J. Stroud earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. He interviewed for multiple head coaching vacancies, including a notable meeting with the New York Jets. Recently, he was rumored to be in the mix for the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator role, a position that ultimately went to Kellen Moore after he was named head coach of the New Orleans Saints.
Tom Pelissero of NFL.com was the first to report Slowik’s hiring, sharing the news on social media.
McDaniel spent time with the 49ers as their run game coordinator from 2017 to 2020 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2021. Meanwhile, Bobby Slowik started with San Francisco as a defensive quality control coach in 2017, transitioned to an offensive assistant role in 2019, and became the team’s offensive passing game specialist in 2021.
In Houston, Slowik played a key role in shaping Stroud into the dual-threat quarterback he is today. Stroud had a standout rookie season in 2023, but his performance in 2024 was more modest, largely due to the Texans’ numerous injuries along the offensive line.
