Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has been nominated by Governor Mike DeWine to serve as Ohio’s next lieutenant governor, pending approval from the state legislature.
“He possesses the necessary skills and meets the criteria I outlined—he knows Ohio,” DeWine said, according to the AP. “I trust Jim Tressel’s judgment. He is a natural leader.”
Tressel stepped down from Ohio State in 2011 amid controversy and later became president of Youngstown State University, where he had previously coached from 1986 to 2000. Under his leadership, the university raised $150 million over a decade. He retired in 2023.
During his time in office, Tressel will prioritize education and workforce development, DeWine stated.
Since DeWine is nearing the end of his term due to term limits, the AP reports that he has not spoken with Tressel about the prospect of a gubernatorial run.
