Less than a day before New Orleans hosts the Eagles and Chiefs for Super Bowl LIX, a report emerged naming the Saints’ next head coach.
Philadelphia offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who will coach in the Super Bowl on Sunday, is expected to become the Saints’ next head coach, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter late Saturday night—unless unforeseen changes occur.
It’s unlikely Moore could perform so poorly against the Chiefs that New Orleans would reconsider him, but Schefter’s timing—releasing the news right before the Super Bowl—angered Philadelphia fans. One user on X called it “dirty business,” while another questioned why it couldn’t wait until Monday.
Schefter’s report states that Moore has been the frontrunner for the New Orleans head coaching job since completing two interviews in January.
Schefter mentioned that the Saints are holding off on finalizing the contract to comply with NFL rules prohibiting contact before the Super Bowl, a violation that previously caused issues for the Cardinals when they hired ex-Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.
Schefter isn’t bound by any restrictions on releasing the news, even on the eve of the Super Bowl. Frustrated Eagles fans reacted, with one asking, “Why not wait until after the game?” and another calling it “a joke.”
One person criticized Schefter, saying, “Releasing this the night before the Super Bowl is a low move, Adam.”
After firing Dennis Allen midseason, the Saints appointed special teams coach Darren Rizzi as interim, finishing 5-12 at the bottom of the NFC South. If hired, Moore would step into his first head coaching role, having previously served as an offensive coordinator for the Eagles, Chargers, and Cowboys. Under Moore, Philadelphia’s offense ranks eighth in the NFL this season, averaging 367.2 yards per game.
