According to an ESPN report, the New Orleans Saints may have a revamped offense in 2024, as Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is expected to become their next head coach.
Here’s a look at how Kellen Moore’s offenses have performed in the NFL under his leadership.
Moore is considered one of the NFL’s brightest offensive minds and was recently praised by former Saints quarterback Drew Brees. With a proven track record as a play caller, he aims to revitalize a Saints offense that ranked in the league’s bottom half in 2024.
In his only season with the Eagles, Moore led them to the NFL’s eighth-ranked offense, with their second-ranked rushing attack being a key factor in their Super Bowl run. Powered by a 2,000-yard season from running back Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia averaged 179.3 rushing yards per game.
Under Moore, the Eagles ranked in the top ten in both total yards and points scored, despite finishing 29th in passing yards. This was a strong rebound after his challenging season as the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator the year before.
Moore’s Chargers finished 18th in total offense and 21st in points scored. Their rushing game ranked 25th, and their passing attack declined following quarterback Justin Herbert’s injury.
After the Chargers transitioned to a new coaching staff, Moore quickly found another opportunity, proving his value with the Eagles following his success with NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys.
Moore took over as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator in 2019, leading offenses that consistently ranked in the NFL’s top half, including two No. 1 finishes in 2019 and 2021. He called plays from 2020 to 2022 but departed Dallas after head coach Mike McCarthy opted to handle play-calling duties himself.
Moore, who played as a backup quarterback for the Cowboys and Lions, started two games for Dallas in 2015 during his fourth of six NFL seasons. He transitioned into coaching the following year, becoming the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach after retiring.
Moore spent five seasons at Boise State, serving as the starting quarterback for four of them and leading the Broncos to a perfect 14-0 season in 2009. In 2011, his Boise State team dominated current Saints quarterback Derek Carr’s Fresno State Bulldogs with a 57-7 victory.
Carr’s future with the Saints remains uncertain despite being under contract, but Moore recently expressed “a ton of respect” for the quarterback. In 2024, the Saints went 5-5 in Carr’s 10 starts and 0-7 in games he did not play.
With Klint Kubiak as the play caller, the Saints’ offense ranked 21st in the NFL last season. After just one year as offensive coordinator, Kubiak departed to take the same role with the Seattle Seahawks.
